Stroby’s list is interesting, but again with the tired cliche that Westlake only wrote funny books under his own name, and serious books as Stark. The Westlake/Stark dichotomy just doesn’t hold up to scrutiny. He wrote differently as Stark, but not more seriously–I’d say less seriously, because Stark was the embodiment of Westlake’s romanticism, as Westlake himself admitted. Parker and Grofield take their share of lumps, but always come out on top in the end, and go off with the gold and the girl. Westlake knew that wasn’t reality. It’s not particularly dark, either, in spite of all the mayhem. It’s life as life ought to be, where you always know where you stand, what you should do, and how you can do it. And where the women are improbably beautiful–and willing.
Truth is, we’re all a lot closer to Dortmunder than Parker. But Dortmunder and the other comic novels are just part of what Westlake published under his own name. Hard Case Crime has been doing a good job reminding people of that, but looks like plenty of people still haven’t gotten the message.
That little girl = Nick Nolte in heavy makeup. He’s good.
The Parker pics look cool. I’m sure the shot of Statham in the cowboy hat made a bunch of paople whine–lest they forget, Parker’s in deep cover. It’s all in the book. Looks like this adaptation is going to be one of the better ones–considering Made in USA is a “Parker” adaptation, it most certainly won’t be the worst.
Correct me if I’m wrong but in the Flashfire novel, I don’t believe Parker wore a cowboy hat. I think he wore a cap of some sort and he grew a cheesy mustache. This is one case where the movie may be an improvement. I had a hard time picturing Parker in the undercover getup in the book. Flashfire was not one of my favorite Parkers but I am still looking forward to the film! A movie in which Parker is actually named Parker is a step in the right direction!
I think he wore a yachtsman’s cap in the book. But it’s not a big detail. And now Statham can prove to potential producers he can play J.R. in the upcoming Dallas remake;-) lol
